Branch of Service: United States Marine Corps
Years of Service: 10

Why did you decide to join the military?
I was born in raised in Maine, and I and wanted to see what else the world had to offer. The best way for me to do that was to join the service. I thought to myself, “If you’re going to do this, take on the challenge and be the best” so I chose to enlist in the United States Marine Corps.

What was your role/roles throughout your time in service?
During my 10 years in the United States Marine Corps, I worked in logistics and administration. Additionally, I was a certified Loadmaster for C-130s. I spent part of my time working for the Commanding Officer and the Executive Officer. Although I performed many duties, I always made my way back to the supply and logistics environment.

What is your current position and how does your military experience fit into your current career?
I am a Buyer in the Purchasing department at Atlantic Diving Supply. My time in military service helped me understand the logistics of orders, how to be superior at customer service and gave me the ability to know how to work with an individual at any level of an organization. My military experience allowed me to be a leader in both my field and in my company.

How was your transition from military life to your civilian career?
The transition from military life to a civilian career was hard and is still something that I struggle with daily. Working as a team is the core of military service and no matter where I was deployed, we worked together to achieve the highest goal. While in the service, there is a very regimented and disciplined environment where individuals do what they are asked and follow orders. In the military, you trust and respect your leaders because they make strategic decisions based on their expertise and knowledge. In the civilian world, this can be different as leaders may want to include multiple levels of an organization in a decision in order to make everyone happy. Transitioning to an environment of individuals that may not understand chain of command or lack professional respect can be difficult.

While transition can be tough, because of the number of individuals with military experience that are employed at Atlantic Diving Supply and our daily interactions with service members, Atlantic Diving Supply embodies those key traits of leadership and teamwork that I am used to. I am proud to be part of such a fantastic civilian company.

What tips and/or advice do you have for veterans leaving their time in service and moving into the civilian workforce?
The military offers transition assistance training, and I encourage all those moving to the civilian workforce to take advantage. Also, I suggest taking your work ethic and discipline and using it to your advantage in the civilian world and remember to be patient and kind throughout your transition.

How does your past military experience empower you in your role here at Atlantic Diving Supply?
My time in the Marine Corps gave me many skills that directly impact my role here at Atlantic Diving Supply:

  1. The Marine Corps prepared me to be able to walk into a room with confidence and pride.
  2. It gave me the ability to work with anyone at any level of an organization.
  3. Working with the best leaders of America taught me patience and how to be forward-thinking.
  4. It led be to be proactive instead of reactive in all aspects of my life, both personal and professional.
  5. Most importantly, it gave me pride in both my veteran status and in working for a company that supports the military and first responders.

Working at Atlantic Diving Supply gives me a huge sense of pride. Even though I am not current active duty military, I still feel like I am contributing to the wellbeing of my fellow Marines as well as other military service men and women daily.
