This session will focus on both current combat casualty care and the future of combat casualty care. Current practical successes from the field will be highlighted and discussed. Secondly, this session will cover future advancements in combat casualty care based on the TCCC recommendations.
Speaker Bio: Dr. Douglas Freer is board certified in both Family Practice and Occupational Medicine and holds advanced qualifications in Sports Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice and is currently employed as the Medical Director for Raytheon Polar Services (RPS). Dr. Freer is responsible for the medical screening of all deploying personnel and for the implementation and execution of all health services support to the US Antarctic Program. He spent 32 years on active duty retiring in 2009 as a CAPTAIN in the Navy Medical Corps. Dr. Freer established the formal Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) and has been a member of the Committee since 2001. He was also instrumental in getting TCCC to be a Marine Corps Service level requirement and a training requirement for all Navy corpsmen. He also established the Navy Medicine Lessons Learned Center while serving as the Commanding Officer of the Naval Operational Medical Institute. He has been subject matter expert on Service level committees for operational medicine and has completed Marine Corps Command and Staff College. Dr. Freer’s personal awards include: the Legion of Merit (3), Meritorious Service Medal (5), the Navy Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and Air Force Commendation Medal. He earned the Fleet Marine Forces Officer Qualification, Surface Warfare Medical Department Officer designation and qualification as an Army Flight Surgeon.
