Free Scuba Certification Benefitting Wounded Warriors
Virginia Beach, VA (March 1, 2010) – The Lynnhaven Dive Center (LDC) is offering free Scuba certification to all wounded warriors in support of their rehabilitation. Sponsored by ADS, Inc., this program provides weightlessness recreation for our wounded service members.
Hosted at LDC in their heated-indoor pool, this full open water certification program is tailored for wounded warriors. These brave men and women have the option of simply receiving adaptive open water training or advancing to the adaptive certification course. Both options are customized classes with specialized training. The program is taught by certified open water instructors who provide specialty training for amputees, paraplegics and partial quadriplegics. “It is such a wonderful feeling to see our wounded warriors enjoy the freedom and excitement that scuba diving offers,” said LDC owner Lindsey Hillier-Hotchkiss.
To date this program has taught six wounded warriors, including Josh Humberger who has recently completed his advanced open water certification. Humberger was the first certified wounded warrior to receive training. As a sniper for the U.S. Army, Humberger became an above-the-knee amputee when he was injured by an IED. With a customized wetsuit to accommodate his injury, Humberger completed thirty dives to achieve his advanced open water certification.
